Hello! My name is Meagan Gerdes. I began my adventure at the Nebraska Center for the Education of Children who are Blind or Visually Impaired in 2003 as a teacher in the severe/profound multiple disabilities classroom. I joined NCECBVI after earning my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education (K-8) with an endorsement in mild/moderate Special Education (K-12). Shortly after starting at the Center, I began taking classes toward my certification for teaching students with visual impairments. In 2009, I earned a master of arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Through my years at NCECBVI, I have taught many Expanded Core Curriculum topics such as independent living skills, sensory efficiency skills, compensatory skills, social interaction skills, self-determination skills, assistive technology, career education, and recreation and leisure skills. I am a firm believer that no one is too old to learn. I am always wanting to learn more so I can better teach my students.

In 2018, I finished my coursework for my certification as an Orientation and Mobility from Salus University. I have changed position from Teacher of the Visually Impaired to Orientation and Mobility specialist. My job at NCECBVI gives me the opportunity to work with students in our center-based program as well as hitting the road and working with students in surrounding school districts. With all my adventures in my professional career, I am also a loving mother of three wonderful children that keeps me on my toes and gives me my zest for life!
